Starfruit, also known as carambola or fruta estrella in Spanish, is a delicious tropical fruit that originates from the warm regions of Asia. Depending on where you live, it may be more or less popular. In tropical places, including Florida in the United States, it is quite popular, so it is not difficult to find either in supermarkets or on trees planted in people’s yards.
Something very interesting about this tree is that you can easily adapt it to a pot, making it ideal for cultivation in cold areas. You know, during the summer you take it outside, and when the temperature drops too low, you move it to a warmer place.
Starfruits can be divided into sweet and sour varieties, with several types in each group. If you are going to plant a tree, it’s best to get a grafted one because if you grow it from seed, the fruit may not be of the quality you’re looking for.
You can eat the fruit fresh directly from the tree or use it to make sweets. In my case, I used the harvest from my tree to make jam. Here’s the recipe; trust me, if you give it a try, you won’t regret it because it’s truly delicious.
Preparation time:
20 minutes to prepare the fruit and other ingredients.
One hour cooking it (depending on how you want the syrup).
Ingredients:
3 pounds of sweet variety starfruits.
3 cups of brown sugar.
2 cups of water.
3 tablespoons of lemon juice.
3 cinnamon sticks.
About half the peel of a lemon, cut into small pieces.
Step 1
Place all the ingredients in a large pot.
Step 2
Using high heat, wait until the mixture starts boiling. Remember to stir the ingredients occasionally to prevent them from sticking.
Step 3
When the mixture starts boiling like in the picture, lower the heat to medium-low and stir the mixture at intervals until the syrup thickens.
Remember two things: I cooked the mixture for about 1 hour to make the jam very thick, and the other is that once you finish cooking and the jam cools, the syrup will thicken a bit more.
Well, I hope you enjoyed the recipe. My jam turned out very sweet, but you know, it’s a matter of taste. If you don’t like too much sugar, you can reduce the amount, perhaps to 2 cups.
If you have any comments or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Thank you very much!
